Today I spent nearly half day in trying to unlock Western Digital HDD. It was password protected from BIOS (some unfortunate guy locked it and forgot). Its unlocked by using MASTER Password available for Western Digital HDD. Master Password used “WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCW” So full procedure. 1) Booted from - Mini Windows Xp 2) Started Victoria HDD Test 3) Select WD HDD - PIO - PRIMARY 4) At Right hand side bottom, enter above master password and click on UNLOCK 5) Then its done. English Version: I’m writing because i have a problem with my WD My passport ultra 500gb, but i can’t open it because i “forgot” the password, but i’m pretty sure that the password is correct but the HD doesn’t accept it. I have the right password on a piece of papar and i used lots of time but after 1 year i can’t access on the HD. I tried other possibility of password but there was no way to get into the HD. How can I recover my files into the hard disk? The diagnostic of WD show me that probably there is a physical problem on the drive. Can you help me?

Share on Facebook Tweet this Share Encryption is a hot-button topic at the moment. If you’re a government official, it’s the bane of the intelligence world and a tool for terrorists. If you’re a whistleblower, freedom fighter, or journalist, it can be your lifeline to those that can help you. If you’re just an average citizen, it can be a way to give you a little bit more privacy than the current climate of technology offers.
But some devices that are designed to help Joe Consumer keep his files safe and secure from prying eyes while on the move are far from capable. In fact, some have been found to be easy enough to crack open that they don’t even require a password — making it rather redundant to create and memorize a long and complicated one.
This was discovered as part of an investigation by a group of security researchers into the levels of security on portable hard drives like Western Digital’s My Passport and My Book series. It turns out they are very lax, as those looking into it discovered multiple ways that the data could be removed quite painlessly. Published in a report titled, “” the results paint a poor picture of Western Digital’s security, but also suggest that the standards within the industry are far from high. Iomega storage manager os x download. While there are several security measures in place, like locking down the USB connection until a password is entered and, they don’t go very far in protecting the data. In one case, the random data used for the password hash is taken from the current time on a computer clock, making it very easy to guess. Although as that particular flaw was patched out some time ago, not everyone will have updated their devices.

In another, much more egregious instance, the hash of the default password was found on some drivers when a user-generated code had only been changed once — making it a breeze for security researchers to crack it. Another problem was that some devices allowed for the copying of the password hash off the device, making it possible to crack it away from the drive in question. In some instances, the Western Digital firmware itself was vulnerable to attack, though this and other problems were less prevalent in newer versions of the drives. Although this isn’t necessarily an indication of every external drive with automated encryption being poorly protected, it does suggest that claims of high-security on such devices should be taken with a pinch of salt.
For those wanting true protection, full-disk encryption is still a much safer bet.
Hi, I have a WD Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB Hard Drive which comes with WD Smartware software. I had put a password in it without a hint and now I have lost the password. This hard drive use 256 bit hardware encryption. All my personnel and important data is in it and I am unable to remember the password.
I just remember that the password starts with a S/s and is 8 or 9 digits long. How can I unlock the drive without formatting it, is there any way to crack or hack the smartware and unlock it. I am willing to pay a hacker to hack smartware software and the password for me. What should I do? You best bet is to contact Western Digital and see if they can help you. As it was they that wrote the software is is they that that will have the best idea of how to decrypt the data. They may have a back door password that might work.
Cracking 256 bit encryption is no trivial task. It is usually only the CIA and similar organisations that have the resources to do such a thing. However, you will almost certainly be asked by WD to prove that you actually own the disk and the data therein is yours. They are not going to decrypt a hard disk just because someone asks them to and it will cost you. They are not going to do this for free.
